Neonatal Hypo-Hyperglycaemia and Electrolytes Disorders

Workshop

  • 13.75 CME Hours (HAAD)
  • 10.5 CPD Credit Units (DHA)

The diagnosis of glucose and electrolytes disturbances requires a specific knowledge of perinatal glucose and mineral physiology, characterized by an initial lowering of plasma levels until a physiological nadir in the first 1-2 days of life, and afterwards by the unique features of newborn metabolism. By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to: • To identify the hypo-hyperglycemia and electrolytes disorders, that frequently occur in the perinatal and neonatal period and could represent severe and life-threatening conditions, for which a careful and prompt correction is needed. • To demonstrate an up-to-date overview on the extremely heterogeneous pathogenetic mechanisms leading to these conditions in the neonatal period. • To explore the practical aspects of the diagnostic pathways and therapeutical approaches for these conditions Learn the deeper insights of the current knowledge of glucose and electrolyte homeostasis and metabolism in the vulnerable neonatal and perinatal period, focusing on the principal pathogenetic mechanisms leading to their derangements.
